Anika Wells’ $67.6 million Journalism Assistance Fund is part paying the wages of more than 2,000 journalists, and more than half the money went to just four ownership groups.

Nine took $16.1 million. Seven’s side of the new Southern Cross group took $11.3 million. Crikey, The Conversation, The Saturday Paper and Mamamia are all there.

News Corp, Sky News and The Guardian were barred from even applying. Opinion writing doesn’t count as news under the government’s own rules. And no funded newsroom ever has to tell its readers.

The fund ran dry in 28 days. One recipient was two days old. Another collapsed five weeks later.
